The study of chiropractic focuses on the musculoskeletal system
(muscles and bones), and looks at how the alignment of the spine
affects the general nervous system and general health of an individual.
When the spine is in alignment, the nerve supply to the body functions
correctly. Subluxation, or misalignment of the spine, interferes
with the body’s natural ability to self-regulate overall health.
The nerves can become compressed or stretched, which can lead to
pain or restricted mobility. Thus, the chiropractor’s goal
is to adjust the spine and correct subluxation, allowing the nervous
system to transmit information properly.
A common misconception is that the chiropractor forces the vertebra
into its proper position. However, the chiropractic goal is simply
to free the vertebra so that it can slip naturally into position,
which is unique to each individual. Adjustments are done to increase
the range and quality of motion in the area being treated.
If the vertebras have been misaligned for a period of time, the
muscles get used to their position and tend to pull the bone out
of alignment again. It may take several adjustments before these
muscles are retrained to the proper position. There are over 20
adjusting systems utilized in chiropractic. Spinal adjustments are
always tailored to the individual, and take into account many factors,
including symptoms, history, age and spinal condition.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
1. What is the “popping”
noise I hear, and if I do not hear the “pop”, does it
mean that the adjustment was not correct?
The “popping” noise is the sound of air moving
through the tissue fluid surrounding the joint capsule. Gases can
build up in this tissue, causing bubbles to form. As the joint is
opened through adjustment, it allows the air to escape. This sound
does not indicate the quality or “success” of the adjustment.
2. Will I experience pain during or after chiropractic treatment?
Adjustment rarely causes pain. However, you may experience
mild muscle soreness and aches following the adjustment. This can
be similar to muscle soreness following exercise, and normally resolves
itself within 12 – 48 hours.
3. How many sessions will I need to correct the problem?
The number of sessions will vary considerably from person
to person. Many factors will determine what is needed, including
the nature of the problem, how long you have had the problem, and
your age (you generally heal more slowly as you get older.)
